Antonio Villaraigosa Congratulations, Mayor Villaraigosa!   Los Angeles, Calif. – On Tuesday, May 17, Los Angeles voters elected Cesar E. Chavez Foundation Founding Member Antonio Villaraigosa to be their next Mayor, and the Foundation congratulates him on this inspiring victory. His campaign slogan was “Si, se puede,” which means “It can be done,” the same motto coined by Cesar during his 25-day fast in 1972. A native of Los Angeles and the oldest of four children, Villaraigosa has dedicated his life and career to public service and his community. As a labor leader, civic leader and elected official he's led the fight to improve our schools, protect the rights of working people, provide health care for uninsured children and make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live. In 1994, Villaraigosa was elected to the State Assembly, and just four years later, his colleagues in the legislature voted to make him the first Assembly Speaker from Los Angeles in 25 years. After running for Mayor of Los Angeles in 2001 Villaraigosa became a distinguished fellow at UCLA and USC. In 2003, Villaraigosa returned to public service to represent the people of the eastside and northeast L.A. communities where he has lived most of his life. Villaraigosa is the father of four children, Marisela, Prisila, Antonio, Jr. and Natalia Fé. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife Corina and his two youngest children.
